Sage 100 Contractor · 30+ Year Oral History

From Master Builder to Sage 100 Contractor.

In 2015, Syscon celebrated 20 years of implementing, supporting, and extending the construction accounting platform originally known as Omware’s The Master Builder — a journey that now spans more than three decades.

How It All Began: 20 Years with Master Builder / Sage 100 Contractor

Larry Wendt recounts the very first client phone call asking about Master Builder, flying out to California for training (complete with an unexpected emergency appendectomy!), meeting Dan Smith and the Omware team, and how Syscon’s construction accounting practice was born.

Why This History Matters
“Back in 1995, a client asked if we could look at a construction program called Master Builder. One flight to California later, we found our calling.”

Long before cloud hosting or mobile field apps existed, construction companies struggled to bridge job estimates, union and prevailing-wage payroll, subcontract compliance, and general ledger accounting. Omware’s The Master Builder was built specifically for contractors — and Syscon was there from the DOS-to-Windows transition onward.

Through Intuit’s acquisition (Intuit Master Builder) and Sage’s stewardship (Sage Master Builder and modern SQL Server–powered Sage 100 Contractor), Syscon stayed close to both the codebase and the people running Monday morning payroll. When contractors needed capabilities that didn’t exist out of the box — period-sensitive Cost-to-Complete, Over/Under Billing (WIP), Indirect Cost Allocation, Positive Pay, and Field-Integrated Time (FIT) — our team wrote them in-house.
